If you're running a very narrative-focused campaign, you may want the party leveling up to coincide with certain plot points. "I want the party to level up "when it makes sense"." This is the only real reason to use milestone. (That's something I think a lot of people who dislike XP overlook - only one person needs to be doing math! Surely you have one person at your table who can do addition easily?) Another 5 seconds, max, for the person who did that to tell everyone what the party's new XP total is. It takes 5 seconds, max, to add two numbers on a calculator. "It's bookkeeping/takes too much time/effort to track." Whenever I see these "Math bad" comments, I always think of "Do you guys not have phones?". I do this with a simple "How important was this Social Interaction/Exploration", followed by awarding the Easy/Medium/Hard/Deadly XP depending on the answer. There are similarly many ways you could fix this. This one's slightly harder to fix, but still not hard. "You should get XP for more than just killing things." Another obvious statement. The solutions to this """problem""" are a dime-a-dozen. This is such an obvious statement that I honestly wonder whether anyone actually has issues with this or if it's just a strawman people create to make XP seem worse than it actually is.

"You shouldn't be able to farm bags of rats for XP." Correct.

The other reason people use XP is that in many cases the specific reasons that drive people to milestone simply aren't applicable: XP is inherently more player-driven: there are things you can do that will earn you XP go out and do them, and you will level up. Which assumes there even is a milestone, and that the party's level progression isn't based purely on the whims of the DM. It's not always obvious to players that "This thing we're doing will lead us to the next milestone". With milestone, progress can often be obfuscated. You know how, when you're playing in milestone, and the players all get excited when the DM announces they level up? With XP, you have that same celebration (though smaller) every Encounter. It's hard to overstate the psychological value of "You did a thing have a reward!". The primary benefit of XP is that players have an objective, tangible measure of progress, even between levels.
